Review:

This is a musical extravaganza about a battle between rock stars and the religious zealots who abhor them and their lifestyle of “Sex, drugs and… sex”. Adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, it features a great array of stars including Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin and Russel Brand to name a few. The cast alone promises to be a bundle of fun of the highest order and the choice to cover many legendary songs, instead of creating their own, means you will not be disappointed by the music in this one! After the popularity of Mamma Mia and shows like Glee, which themselves feature cover songs or mash-ups, this seems like a fairly safe and easy choice but perhaps also the best one.

As a whole the film does very well. The director has experience in musical theatre, having directed the Hairspray remake and been a judge on the programme So You Think You Can Dance for a spell, and so does a good job. The actors in it all perform well; however Tom Cruise, as ever a brilliant actor, outshines them doing an amazing job of playing the rock star. You'll never have seen him on better form, so for that alone it's worth going to see this film.

If you're looking for a fun film with great music then this ticks all the boxes. A truly fantastic way to spend an evening.
