Review:

Ingredients:

  • Stellar cast with three female leads (Elisabeth Moss in particular – definitely recommend watching Mad Men on “your” Netflix account when you inevitably miss those 9am lectures)
  • A talented director (Oscar-nominated co-writer of Straight Outta Compton)
  • Based on a DC Vertigo comic

Ultimately it’s a film based on the premise of women fighting against a patriarchal system during a particularly difficult time period living in a particularly dangerous city. It had the opportunity to be a down-and-dirty 1970s gangster film, where the gangster husbands get thrown in jail and it’s the wives' turn to step up.

Now it’s out, it’s being absolutely slated as bad, “undercooked” trash – with critics questioning how someone could get something so potentially thrilling so very, very wrong. I’m still excited to watch it, but with everyone now telling me constantly what a moron I am I think its more just to see how bad it is… So yeah, Happy Filmgoing!

Alex Pointon (for the record the film wasn’t actually out when I chose it)
