Review:

Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann) is a lanky and awkward high-schooler who prides himself on his ability to glide under the radar, spending most of his time parodying classic movies with his friend Earl (RJ Cyler). One day, he receives news that one of his classmates, Rachel (Olivia Cooke), has been diagnosed with leukaemia. Originally forced to spend time with each other, the two find that their friendship blossoms and that their outlook on life will change forever. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a wonderful story about life and friendship, a quirky teen movie that differs from the norm and is all the better for it. The story plays out non-conventionally, interspersed with funny animations or clips from Greg and Earl’s films that add an extra level of warmth and humour. The young cast are simply wonderful, and you cannot fail to care for the two main characters as their friendship blooms, making the tale all the more bittersweet as they face Rachel’s battle with her illness and Greg’s questioning of his future. Few films have the ability to make you feel warm inside, and truly thankful for the people you get to spend your life with – this is one of those films. This is a film that is often hysterically funny one moment, and incredibly sad the next – you won’t see anything else like it for a long time, and I fully recommend coming to see it.
