Transit is a film that will linger in your mind. Ahead of the arrival of an enemy force, Georg flees from Paris to Marseille, a city in limbo, filled with people desperate to obtain the necessary transit visa to escape before their time runs out. Georg assumes the identity of a dead writer, hoping for a way out, but as he develops a friendship with the son of a fallen friend and encounters a mysterious woman, leaving Marseille proves to be harder than anticipated.
While adapted from a book set in the 1940s, the film’s universe is timeless and present, which made the story all the more haunting. Transit is masterfully made, with every character, every shot, every exchange mattering. The film approaches themes of belonging, of purpose, of morality, of loss, and does so very deftly.
Transit is, quite simply, brilliant. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
