Review:
Based on a genuine psychological experiment conducted at Stanford
University in the 1970s. 'The Experiment' was a major hit on the
festival circuit, and is due for its national release at the end of
March. It concerns a group of 20 people who are brought to and abandoned
prison and split into guards and prisoners. The guards are given
all-encompassing power, and the plot is left to boil. As the lines
between experiment and reality blur, a desperate struggle for survival
begins which must end in tragedy.
'The Experiment' has been hailed as a work of genius by British
critics. Empire said 'The Experiment' delivers 'an unforgettably
suspenseful second half', while Total Film calls it a 'harrowing
journey to hell'. With the current vogue for films focussing on our
obsession with violence inherent in society (consider 'Battle
Royale' and 'Series 7: The Contenders') this is an important and
timely reminder of the human capacity for evil.
This is an unmissable drama and recommended for anyone with an interest
in on-the-edge film making, or anyone who likes films which make them
think.
