Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
On December 17, Christmas cheer takes a holiday
A Series of Unfortunate Events is the series of books by Daniel Handler, standing at eleven books in October 2004, but projected to run to thirteen volumes. In this, the movie of the book series, Violet, Klaus and Sunny learn that their parents have died in a fire and left them
an enormous fortune, not to be used until the eldest child is of age. The orphans stay with herpetologist Montgomery Montgomery (Connolly) and grammar-wise Josephine Anwhistle (Meryl Streep) but eventually end up with their greedy distant relative Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) whom they soon learn is, along with the help of his assistants, trying to steal their fortune for himself.
This hugely successful and exciting set of stories has not been diluted during transformation from page to screen. Jude Law's diction is perfect as Lemony Snicket, the film's narrator, and the multi-talented Canadian comic Jim Carrey is superb as always in another challenging role. Throw in the magic of the world's finest actress, Meryl Streep, and the humour of bumbling comedian-turned-actor, Billy Connolly, and you have a refreshing tonic to Harry Potter mania. Miss this, miss out!
