Heads You Live... Tails You Die.
Review:
Tony Scott (Top Gun, True Romance, Spy Game) returns to the big screen with Domino, an innovative action extravaganza interlaced with just a hint of truth, starring the ubiquitous Keira Knightley fresh from her turn as Elizabeth Bennet in the most recent adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. Sporting an altogether more rugged look, her latest film could not be more different than the period piece that preceded it. Domino is a pseudo-biopic of the life of Domino Harvey, the daughter of actor Laurence Harvey who abandoned her life as a model and took up an altogether different career path, trying her hand as a bounty hunter.
With a tight and witty script from Richard Kelly, the director and writer of cult classic Donnie Darko, Scott keeps the excitement flowing throughout with some big action set pieces. The use of a rather unique plot device is more than enough to keep the audience guessing, as nothing is ever what is seems. The actors also lend their part to its success, delivering a series of poised performances. As Domino, Keira Knightley has enough nuances in her role to give it some weight and credibility but remains playful throughout and has clearly put in the preparation for the more physically demanding scenes. The rest of the cast bring their considerable talent to bear with Mickey Rourke particularly noticeable as a fellow bounty hunter and her father figure, surely continuing his ascent back to stardom following his powerhouse performance in Sin City.
A crowd pleaser at heart, Domino never strays far from this central aim, and is designed to leave you perched on the edge of your seat throughout. It is one of those films that just needs to be seen on the big screen, so make sure you take up the opportunity before it is too late and experience it here at WSC.
