Evolution, one of the latest sci-fi releases to come from DreamWorks could be best described as a good story about aliens, with humour. One of the other good points is that Ivan Reitman one of the best Hollywood comedic directors of the 80’s is at the helm. The film pictures a fire-fighting cadet, two college professors, and a geeky-but-sexy government scientist that are working against an alien organism that has been rapidly evolving ever since its' arrival on Earth inside a meteor.
It begins with the introduction of Wayne Green (Sean William Scott), a wannabe fireman practicing for his fireman final, who gets an unexpected visitor - a meteor, carrying alien organisms hits the heart of the Arizona desert. After a community college science professor, Ira Kane (David Duchovny) and his eccentric geologist buddy, Harry Block (Orlando Jones) discover the meteor, they find that the rock starts to create weird alien creatures that soon begin to multiply and evolve. Kane's nemeses, General Woodman (Ted Levine) and the military, assisted by government scientist Allison Reed (Julianne Moore), get involved but, soon enough, things get too out-of-control. It's up to the teaming of Kane, Block, Green and Reed to stop the evolution.
If you are a Reitman fan and you liked Ghostbusters then you will definitely love going to watch Evolution. Evolution keeps some distance from the films it could be compared too as the characters and situations are totally different. Duchovny turns a cool performance brilliantly assisted by the two comedians; Jones delivering some funny lines and Scott’s hilarious acting. Moore’s character playing ability comes in handy here, playing the hottie-yet-clumsy love interest. A lot of the film makes one question what it is; this one is just a crowd-pleaser with nice special effects and makeup, a few laughs and comedic situations short of comedic greatness.
