Sex and the City: The Movie
Get Carried Away.
They are back. Finally! After the series ended amid international tears in 2004, sex and the city columnist Carrie Bradshaw and best friends, Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte and of course New York City, are all back together again. Fully drenched in designer clothes and accessories, they are as close, amusing and as enviable as ever.
There has been a gap of several years since the series ended and fashion obsessed Carrie ended up with financier Mr Big, the man she’s been dating tumultuously for ten years. The pair are still madly in love and are only slightly hindered by Carrie’s irrepressible penchant for high heels – the size of the closet is highly important when it comes to moving in together – and are planning on getting married; planning being the operative word here. Lawyer Miranda is still living in Brooklyn with husband Steve and son Brady but when Steve admits to having cheated, singledom starts tugging at her broken bits of heart. The outrageous Samantha has moved to LA for Smith, her television star toy-boy but is struggling with the whole monogamous relationship thing and resorts to food to keep herself in check: man wise, not shape wise. Charlotte is at home in New York with husband Harry and adopted daughter Lily. They are living happily ever after and things don’t seem to be able to get any better when she finds out that she is unexpectedly pregnant. All the cast are back including Stanford Blatch, Anthony Marantino and Jennifer Hudson makes an appearance as Carrie’s new personal assistant.
For the hardcore fans this is 148 minutes of unadulterated bliss. It is a conveyor belt of New York sights, designer dresses and moments that make you go “I’ve missed them so much!” The film surprisingly manages to fill the gaping whole left after you’ve watched the series boxset so much you know it word for word but for the newly introduced or those being dragged by girlfriends or fanatical friends and aren’t too fussed, there is enough comedy to keep you entertained. But this isn’t a straightforward fairytale so be prepared. Take tissues as well as popcorn.
I should also warn you, try to not go shopping the day after you’ve seen it. The jealousy will seriously damage your bank balance.
