Review:

Horton (Jim Carrey) was just another elephant minding his own business in the jungle until one day when he hears a cry coming from a speck of dust. He discovers that the city of Whoville is situated on this speck of dust and that the Whos who live there are in danger while the speck is still floating through the jungle. Horton agrees to take the Whos to a safe place but his plans are thwarted when the other creatures in the jungle refuse to believe that anything could be living on something so small and try to stop Horton from completing his mission. Will Horton be able to save the Whos or will Whoville be crushed due to his neighbours’ ignorance?

In Horton Hears a Who! the animation is visually stunning and the bright colours give the film a playful feel. The great variety of animation also keeps the viewer entertained; the film pays homage to the original Seuss style and also features a hilarious send up to Japanese anime. A sharp and detailed style makes the film very aesthetically pleasing.

The script is also well-crafted and bursting with jokes that all age groups can find amusing. The dialogue is true to the Seuss story and provides a heart-warming story. The eye-catching visuals and the comical screenplay work well together to provide the viewer with an entertaining performance.

Jim Carrey is brilliant as Horton; he does not overdo his usual improvised silliness and is still sweet and hilarious. Steve Carell provides a similarly understated performance which just adds charm and humour to the citizen of Whoville he portrays. The whole cast is fantastic; the cute young animals, the overpowering kangaroo and the entertaining monkeys are just some of the highlights. With a great array of bright, engaging characters everyone has someone to relate to and laugh about.

Overall, Horton Hears a Who! is a highly entertaining and beautifully crafted animated film. There are laughs for every age group and the all star cast provide interesting and amusing characters and a touching story. It goes recommended to those in search of a sweet and hilarious story that is also visually spectacular.
