For the previous ten years, Jane (Streep) has been trying to find some type of happiness after her divorce from Jake (Baldwin), a successful attorney who left her to marry a much younger woman. The mother of three grown-up children and the owner of a popular bakery, Jane still feels lonely and lost. After meeting Adam (Martin), a sensitive and shy architect who’s hired to reconstruct her kitchen, Jane finally seems to move on and leave her ruined marriage behind. However, their son’s college graduation ceremony brings Jane and Jake back together. It seems like family reunion is closer than ever. But it’s complicated. With the secret affair with her own ex-husband which must be hidden from their kids, her romantic relationship with Adam and the marriage of her elder daughter, Jane’s life is suddenly full of surprising twists and hilarious moments.

Meryl Streep is the most solid reason for being glued to the screen. Indeed, she is as inimitable and enjoyable as ever. Add her terrific chemistry with Baldwin and a brilliant Martin’s sweet charm. More reasons needed?

The success of What Women Want and The Holiday set a bar pretty high for Nancy Meyers’s future films. However, she managed to maintain consistent quality, and It’s Complicated is a perfect proof of this. With the help of a cast of A-list actors in one of the best ensemble works of the year, the director does a splendid job of reflecting truly complicated post-divorce relationships. The movie was nominated for 3 Golden Globes for Best Picture, Best Actress (Streep) and best screenplay (Meyers). This wonderfully told story is a sophisticated combination of drama and comedy which definitely will not leave you indifferent. Overall, It’s Complicated is simply one of the best romantic comedies of the season.
