I Love You Philip Morris
The conman who wouldn’t go straight.
Steven Russell (Carrey) is a devoted, loving husband and a role model in the police force, until a car accident makes him dramatically rethink his straight and narrow ways. Russell decides that he is gay and that there is more to life than a full-time job. Moving from one get-rich-scheme-quick to another, he becomes a notorious conman and soon finds himself thrown into the State Penitentiary. Here he falls head-over-heels for Phillip Morris (McGregor). You know it’s true love when you would stop at nothing to make the man of your dreams happy.
This film has impeccable comedy timing, with good old American slapstick thrown in as an extra bonus. The script is not in the same vein of all the other comedies floating around and some would argue that there are far deeper elements to it, which could be due to the fact that the plot is based on a true story.
Jim Carrey seems to be sticking to one film a year, yet still never fails to disappoint. He seems to have come a long way from Ace Ventura, to playing different yet quirky parts such as the protagonist in Yes Man and now the remarkably mad Steven Russell. Some people have criticised the fact that the two homosexual leads are played by heterosexual men, but the performances work wonderfully. Carrey and McGregor display the requisite acting skills to play the parts well and have very convincing on-screen chemistry. This film will have you on the floor laughing, and will even tickle those lacking the particular sense of humour usually suggested by Jim Carrey films.
