The Eagle
Flavius Aquila was the leader of the ninth legion of the Roman Empire, who lost the golden Eagle (a symbol of Roman pride and strength) in the wilds of Scotland in 140AD. As an attempt to run away from and restore his father’s reputation, his son Marcus (Tatum) travels to his dangerous new post as a young centurion in Britain.
After suffering some serious injuries, Marcus sets about his recovery. During a gladiator fight, Marcus sees Esca (Bell), a native refusing to fight in the ring despite knowing the only alternative is death. In confused awe of Esca’s bravery, Marcus persuades the crowd to save him. His uncle, surprised by Marcus’ actions decides to buy Esca as his nephew’s slave. Marcus, unused to slavery, is uncertain about how to work with Esca; however after proving his loyalty to Marcus, they travel up to Hadrian’s Wall then into the north to try and find the Eagle.
During their journey the two men begin to understand what they both think of each other and the slavery the Britains are forced into; this knowledge then helps them learn to work together. As they travel, encountering several dangerous tribes set upon the destruction of the Roman hold on Britain, their relationship is tested; all to find the golden Eagle of the ninth.
This film could appear a simple action film, but this is not the case; the main theme is really about the relationship between these two different yet determined men. This film demonstrates how two completely disparate cultures can work together, but only through mutual respect.
