Review:

Created in 1977, Judge Dredd is yet another comic book character with an attitude brought to the silver screen. However, unlike Iron Man or Spiderman, Dredd (Karl Urban) is one character with no qualms about killing the bad guy. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where a massive atomic war has decimated the planet, the remaining populace live in overcrowded megacities dotted across the world. The Judges are the ultimate law enforcers with the power of Judge, Jury…and Executioner.

Written by Alex Garland, better known for Sunshine and 28 Days Later, the film is akin to his previous works with its scale and grimy real world detailing. Pete Travis adds the directing flare and style that we recognise from Vantage Point to give a unique perspective on this world he has created.

Dredd is not only enjoyable for its action-packed chases, fight scenes and cool tech, but actually makes you think. Themes such as the police state, authoritarianism and the power of one man are often brought into question and provide real depth to what appears on the surface to be an action romp. The best way to come to an opinion on this film is to see it. In the ineffable words of Dredd, It’s judgement time…
