Sightseers
Sightseers, the third offering from Kill List director Ben Wheatley, is a ‘pitch black comedy’ that will leave the viewer unsure whether to laugh or cry. Alice Lowe and Steve Oram, who also co-wrote the screenplay, star as Tina and Chris, a young couple whose countryside holiday spirals horribly out of control.
The film begins with Chris deciding that he needs to show Tina his world, and whisk her away from the sheltered life she’s been living. She is thrilled to escape from the watchful eye of her overbearing mother, and she and Chris hit the M1 in their battered caravan with the innocent intention of sampling the finest tourist attractions Yorkshire has to offer.
Their romantic getaway turns sour when Chris reveals that behind his cuddly, ginger-bearded exterior lies the soul of cold hearted killer. Eager to please, and to continue with their ‘erotic odyssey,’ Tina allows herself to be pulled into his twisted rampage.
Wheatley’s direction takes the viewer on a rollercoaster ride, with the film changing tone from hilarious to sinister in the blink of an eyelid, making Sightseers a great addition to his small but perfectly formed repertoire and keeping low budget British black comedy on the menu. The talented leads give incredible performances, delivering each and every one of their ‘killer’ lines to perfection. Sightseers is definitely worth a watch!
