Review:

Described as the “sort of” sequel to Knocked Up, comedy king Judd Apatow returns us to the world of married couple Debbie and Pete (Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd). The film follows the couple as Debbie and Pete reach 40. As Debbie struggles with turning 40, Pete struggles with his business and financial problems that could affect his marriage. The film is very relatable and represents marriage in a realistic way dealing with issues such as pregnancy, the in-laws and the difficulty of maintaining a healthy sex life within a marriage.

Leslie Mann is incredibly authentic as Debbie whilst Paul Rudd is immensely likeable as Pete. The characters are just as, if not more, endearing now as they were in Knocked Up. It’s nice to see the roles of the kids develop. Their comic timing is impeccable as both daughters provide some truly funny moments as their parents try to ban technology, whilst Sadie’s obsession with Lost also provides a few laughs. The supporting cast are also brilliant with the likes of familiar comedy faces including Jason Segel, Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy, and Chris O’Dowd who is wonderfully sarcastic in his performance. Megan Fox is also very enjoyable as she shows promising comedic talents playing Debbie’s co-worker Desi. There is even a little cameo from Billy Joe, the lead singer of Green Day.

This is 40 is a touching comedy about marriage with realistic performances that will leave you warmed as you leave the cinema.
