Before Midnight
It was 9 years ago when Jesse (Ethan Hawke) met Celine (Julie Delpy) on a train bound for Vienna. Now, living in Europe and vacationing in Greece, they have two twin girls Nina and Ella. Jesse is struggling to adapt to the role of being a separated father for his son, Hank, in America, and the film follows the couple and the problems they stumble across whilst trying to rekindle the spark in their relationship.
Before Midnight is a breathtakingly accurate and authentic portrayal of the love and connection between two people. The brilliant storytelling means that no fancy special effects or elaborate sets are required to make this a must-watch film, and an instant Oscar contender. Instead, the sharp, intelligent and witty writing makes for an original, creative and unique story which is so raw and emotionally honest it will have you both laughing and crying throughout. An emotional rollercoaster of a film, it looks as though director Richard Linklater has surpassed himself once more.
The third installment of a beautiful franchise, following the highly successful Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, Before Midnight also functions well on its own. It is a powerful depiction of the relationship between a couple, and a brilliant and simple piece of film making. Even if you’ve not seen the two previous films, do not miss this one.
