Review:

Winter’s Tale is the filmic adaptation of Mark Helprin’s novel of the same name. Both written and directed by Akiva Goldsman, the film follows the story of Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) and Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). Moving from the early 20th century to modern day New York City and full of mythical creatures and happenings, Winter’s Tale is a moving supernatural love story.

On a winter’s night in New York City, Peter Lake, a burglar, breaks into the house of Beverly Penn, a wealthy young heiress. In a twist of fate they fall for each other; however, their love is endangered from the very beginning. Beverly is dying from consumption and Peter tries to do all he can to save her, in both the past and the present. But the true obstacle standing in Peter’s path is his former mentor Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), who is equally determined to bring Peter down to his devilish depths. Only a miracle can save Peter and his one true love in this all-or-nothing struggle between good and evil.

Akiva Goldsman brings together an all-star cast in his directorial debut, including Will Smith as Lucifer. With spectacular shots of the snow-clad New York cityscape set to the beautifully composed score by Hans Zimmer and Rupert Gregson-Williams, this film tells a story of love that defies the limitations of time and that is determined to endure even in the face of deadly adversity.
