Review:

A German masterpiece, Die Welle explores the consequences of one unconventional teacher’s social experiment in an attempt to make teaching autocracy more interesting for both him and his students. An anarchist, Rainer Wenger faces the difficult task of convincing his sceptical post-war generation students that a dictatorship can still be established and accepted in their society.

Wenger puts himself in the position of the dictator and his class as the society. He suggests they all wear a uniform to create a feeling of solidarity and the group also decide on a name (‘die Welle’ meaning ‘the wave’) and a salute. Whilst the experiment does succeed in bringing the group closer together, the connection to fascism is unavoidable and soon the experiment completely takes over their lives.

Powerfully thought-provoking, utterly chilling and completely riveting, this film will have you hooked from the very beginning.
