Review:

Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is an Indianapolis teenager, intelligent, sarcastic and suffering from terminal thyroid cancer. Believing her to be depressed, her mother encourages her to attend a cancer support group at the local church, where she meets Gus (Angel Elgort), who had suffered from osteosarcoma and lost his leg as a result. The two bond, and they share a love that takes them on an incredible journey.

The Fault in our Stars is such a touching, tragic, bittersweet film – based on a true story, this is an inspiring tale of two young people who are facing death and decide to live life to the fullest. It tugs at your heartstrings, due in no small part to the quality of the actors, who portray their characters with incredible sensitivity and share such a wonderful chemistry that you feel they were made for each other – you understand the protagonists, and you care for them, hoping for them even as you know the inevitable approaches.

It has touches of humour and of tragedy, these moments contained within a wonderful script and accentuated by the incredible direction and score – it is beautifully shot, doing justice to the book and the tale of these two lovers. Not a moment is wasted, and all the supporting cast are terrific. It’s a really beautiful piece of cinema, able to warm the hardest heart and reduce the coldest of people to tears – a moving love story that will make you appreciate life and those around you, and it shouldn’t be missed.
