Boyhood
12 years in the making
Spanning 12 years, Boyhood follows the life of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from little boy to young adult. It charts the joys and difficulties of childhood and adolescence in an entirely new way, as we experience all that Mason does between the ages of 6 and 18. From family holidays to graduating high school, the film charts all the defining moments of childhood and explores the transformations of the family dynamic through Mason’s eyes. Divorce, remarriage and co-parenting are key themes throughout the film, highlighting its attempt to understand the modern conception of the family unit.
What is truly incredible about this film is that it was shot with the same cast throughout; we see not only Mason grow, but also his parents (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette) and his sister, Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). We see the impact of their choices on each other and how it affects the way in which Mason grows up.
At times it feels more like a documentary than a film, but told through the perspectives of a child, teenager and young adult - all of whom are the same person. You can’t help but reflect on your own childhood memories as you watch Mason's, and it truly is a phenomenal portrayal of parenthood as well as childhood in today’s world. Incredibly moving and nostalgic, and set to a recognisable soundtrack that marks each year, Boyhood is a cinematic marvel.
