Inherent Vice
If you can remember the 60s, you weren’t there… Set in the tail end of the psychedelic era, Joaquin Phoenix is Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello, a free spirit / hippie who moonlights as a private detective. When an old flame turns up at his house without invitation, Doc suspects it is for more than reminiscing about old times. Her boyfriend’s wife is plotting to have him committed and Doc is the only one she can trust… With a few nods to film noir detective mysteries of the past, this is more than simply an homage. Laced with a sprinkling of oddball characters, a surreal sense of humour, delight in aesthetics and great joie-de-vive, this film is one of a kind. With the sublime combination of Thomas Pynchon’s prose and Paul Thomas Anderson’s direction, this is sure to be enjoyed by all. It’ll have you gripped, mesmerised and laughing out loud throughout. Definitely one you won’t want to miss!
