Man Up
Right Time, Right Place, Wrong Date
After a round of subpar boyfriends, and blind dates so disastrous as to bring into question whether the people who set them up were really her friends, Nancy (Lake Bell – What Happens in Las Vegas, No Strings Attached) makes the bold (or incredibly foolish) decision to open herself up to love again. On the way to her parents 40th wedding anniversary, after a newly-made acquaintance on the train leaves behind her book (and identifier to her blind date), Nancy seizes the opportunity and becomes someone else for the night. Everything goes swimmingly, except for one little thing – the truth! Her date, Jack, is Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), as always, delivering one- liners in his own inimitable style. Lake Bell is also excellent at delivering understated slights that go far over the heads of the idiots that seem inexorably drawn to her. The script is sharp and funny, and the magic between Simon Pegg and Lake Bell is unmistakable. It is rare to get a romantic comedy with a belting script, sharp banter, and chemistry between the leads that still feels so undeniably real. Heavy on com, and light on rom, Man Up may have found the perfect balance for the genre. The most original romantic comedy in years, and packed with British talent, you’d be crazy to miss it!
