Review:

New and fresh (not to mention good) horrors are few and far between, so you don’t want to miss Unfriended. It takes the premise of a slasher film, but mixes it with technology to present a horror experience like no other. Set on the laptop screen of high school student Blaire Lily (Shelley Hennig) a year after the suicide of fellow student and victim of cyber-bullying Laura Barnes, the film follows a group of friends who find themselves targeted by an anonymous account. Unable to get rid of the account, it soon dawns on the teens that they are facing the ghost of Laura, who has returned to get fatal revenge for the harassment she suffered in her final days. The film is different from other slashers in that its setting enables us to truly identify with Blaire – we see what she likes, what she thinks, we watch her ponder what to type, and it adds a personal touch. Unlike most horrors, we actually feel for the characters and care when they suffer. The film also uses its desktop setting for maximal effect – never before have drinking games, webcam chats and music playlists been so frightening. This is a terrifying horror film for a digital generation, and you don’t want to miss it.
