Review:

Although there have been many films about boxing previously made, Southpaw redefines the sport genre with raw emotion with equal amounts of action and drama. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as boxer Billy Hope facing many struggles that tear apart what his life once was. With tragic events that drastically change the more glamorous opening mood of the film, Hope is forced to work towards finding redemption and an escape from despair and grief. His commitment to the role in a physical and emotional way transcends the stereotypical expectations as he plays a character that is passionate and driven to regain his life. Also starring Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Oona Laurence and 50 Cent, Southpaw promises very emotional viewing through strong performances showing both tragedy and recovery in a hard-hitting way.
