Under Milk Wood
Based on the radio drama written by Dylan Thomas, this 2015 remake depicts the lives of the villagers living in a small town on the coast of Wales. However, this being Thomas’ work, it’s not that simple; you are also shown the dreams and memories of the villagers such as Captain Cat’s reminiscences of his life at sea or Polly Carter’s desire for her late lover. Prepare to enter into a world where the term surreal is an understatement. All of this is told to the audience through an omniscient narrator- another classic Dylan Thomas trope which beautifully combines melodic elements with the strange and psychological with the symbolic. The film of course has many comedic moments to prevent the atmosphere from becoming too heavy but nonetheless, you will definitely be feeling as though you have fallen down the rabbit hole. If you like classic British humour, Thomas’ poetry or just a fan of the welsh landscape, this film is for you.
