Colossal
An uncontrollable monster.
In this unique mishmash of genres, whenever Gloria (Anne Hathaway) binge drinks, a giant lizard-like monster wreaks havoc and destruction in South Korea. An out-of-town online magazine writer whose inspiration has run dry, she trades hitting the keyboard with hitting the bottle. Kicked out of her ex's apartment, she has nowhere to go but back to her hometown, where she reconnects with an old friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis, Horrible Bosses) and realises that somehow she is the reason for the monster in Seoul that she's been watching on the news.
As you may already guess, the film at times, can be quite surreal. Waking up with a hangover and instead of asking "How much did I drink?", asking "How many did I kill?" It's a fascinating premise of inner struggles conjuring fantastical monsters, in a similar vein to When A Monster Calls, but with a darker comic tone. Held together by its leading lady, who as always, has a seemingly effortless ability to make her characters real, layered and compelling.
