Review:

Nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film at the Academy Awards, comes a visual spectacle like no other – the world’s first fully painted feature film!

The director Dorota Kobiela trained as a painter, and was inspired by reading Vincent van Gogh’s letters to create this one-of-a-kind fusing of art forms. “We cannot speak other than by our paintings”, Vincent wrote in his last letter before his untimely and mysterious death. Arguably the most famous painter of all time, this film tells his story, and how else, but through his paintings?

Van Gogh’s most iconic works were recreated on film with actors, then each frame was then painstakingly painted over by hand. This experimental technique took four years to develop, and 125 artists painting over 65,000 frames to create the film. TV and film veterans Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), and John Sessions (The Bounty) voice the larger roles, and are joined by a number of up-and-coming stars.

Watching van Gogh’s paintings come to life is visually arresting and never gets old. Truly unique, you are sure to find this a magical and utterly mesmerising experience.
