Review:

Brigsby Bear, one of the weirder films of the year, manages to tell a quirky but sweet story about modern popular culture and the value of family and friendship.

James (Kyle Mooney) is obsessed with an educational TV programme called Brigsby Bear Adventures, in which the eponymous bear shares lessons about life, physics, what bin to put food waste in, and everything in between. James, however, is the show’s only viewer. When Brigsby Bear Adventures ends suddenly, his life is turned upside down as he’s forced to confront uncomfortable truths and an unfamiliar world. But, with help from his friends, James sets out to finish the story once and for all by creating one last adventure for Brigsby.

Kyle Mooney manages to bring real life to his character, making his eccentricity believable and relatable. Up-and-coming young actor Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is great as James’s friend Spencer, while Mark Hamill is brilliant fun in his supporting role.

Brigsby Bear is an impressibly creative film, with every second spent inside the retro Brigsby Bear Adventures universe a delight. The film, produced by comedy trio The Lonely Island, is also very funny, but never at the expense of any of its characters. It’s unique, it’s entertaining, and it’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. It’s Brigsby Bear!
