Review:

Things started going wrong for Meg (Storm Reid) when her father (Chris Pine) disappeared; a brilliant scientist working on a theory that people can travel across light years instantaneously using the right frequency. After four years, even Meg is starting to lose hope that she’ll ever see him again…

Her genius adoptive brother, Charles Wallace, who’s always been a bit of an oddball, has befriended a trio of colourful and bizarrely garbed strangers: Mrs Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon – Wild, Legally Blonde) tends to run at the mouth and is frequently dismissive of Meg; Mrs Who (Mindy Kaling – The Mindy Project) has evolved beyond language so can only talk in quotes – Rumi, Shakespeare, Buddha, Churchill, amongst others; and Mrs Which, a looming being played by none other than Oprah Winfrey (proving she’s more than just a brand). They reveal the truth about her father: he didn’t leave, he was lost in space. But they can help find him, and so begins this strange and wonderful adventure…

For those who might be put off by young leads – don’t! There’s not one instant that Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin (a new friend who gets dragged along for the ride) overact, underact, or are just plain irritating. This is a beautiful and heart-warming romp where kids learn to accept even their faults, use their intelligence, and that love can banish the darkness from the world.
