Creed II
Like fathers, like sons
Another knockout film starring Michael B Jordan (Creed, Black Panther) as the protagonist Adonis Johnson. We find Adonis riding high – undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the world, and able to afford to move to a more expensive house, together with his love, Bianca (Tessa Thompson – Thor: Ragnarok, Creed). However, the boxing pundits as well as his fans are starting to complain that the only reason he’s still champion is a lack of decent competitors…
Cue Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren - Expendables) – Russian boxer renowned for killing Adonis’ father, the legendary boxer, Apollo Creed in the ring. Not that this stole any of his fans or worldwide acclaim; these only disappeared when he lost to the ‘Italian Stallion’ in a subsequent fight. For over twenty years, he’s been training his son relentlessly to be the next champion of the world. A veritable machine of strength and stamina and eager to make his mark, he plans to make a name for himself by beating our hero! Adonis accepts the challenge, but his girlfriend, fears that history will repeat itself and leave their child without a father. She’s not alone, and even his good friend and coach, Rocky (Sylvester Stallone – Creed, Expendables), refuses to train him. How can he possibly win?
The director from Creed (as well as the stunning and innovative Black Panther) is one of the writers, and clearly aware of why Creed worked so well, but without just repeating the same formula. Michael B Johnson is at the top of his game, and Sylvester Stallone reminds us how he can deliver more than just stone-faced one-liners. Definitely one to watch.
