Review:

Oscar-winning Damien Chazelle (with a short but impressive portfolio of La La Land and Whiplash) directs this biography of Neil Armstrong; set around the events in his life, and the space mission, which led to his insurmountable achievement as the First Man on the Moon.

Ryan Gosling (La La Land, Blade Runner 2049) gives a reserved and controlled performance as the legendary astronaut, a picture of calm in the face of high sacrifice personally, and intense national pressure. This sensitive drama starts with all the events that led to the moon landing. The often exacting standards (and frequent fatalities) in order to in perfect equipment that simply could not afford to fail in the vacuum of space.

Thrilling and action-packed, yet also thoughtful and romantic, this wonderful film captures the awe and wonder that space travel should engender: the historic moment of the first footprints on the moon; and the mind-blowing moments of looking back to see Earth from space.
