Review:

Having lost his job (yet again), Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal - Nightcrawler), transplants his family to a new home in 1950’s Montana, in order to start over. He’s lost his job before but this time, things are just not the same… When Jerry takes a low-paid firefighting job where he has to spend time away in the mountains, they trial living as a single-parent family and Jeanette (Carey Mullligan – The Great Gatsby), finds herself struggling against depression.

Their teenage son, Joe (Ed Oxenbould) is the unfortunate witness to the breakdown of his parents’ marriage. And much as he’s trying to be supportive of his mother, who’s showing courage in the face of despair and honestly considering her options, he just wants his family back together…

This is a beautifully shot, and absorbing drama, where Mulligan gives arguably the finest performance in her career. Winning a number of awards from Film Festivals, including Cannes and Sundance, this is an impressive debut by director Paul Dano, and a faithful adaptation of the novel by Richard Ford.
