Review:

Rocketman is a terrific biopic that celebrates the fantastic life of Elton John. The film takes us through his fascinating story, from his difficult childhood to his discovery of music and then his rise to stardom. We are also shown the darker side of John’s life – how he struggled with fame and his vices, and how he overcame those challenges. Rocketman is very faithful to its larger-than-life subject, with Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) pulling off an outstanding and convincing performance in his role as John. Richard Madden (Bodyguard, Game of Thrones) is also very good as John Reid, Elton’s icy one-time lover and manager.

Rocketman is very much a musical, with Elton John’s numbers superbly integrated with the story and used to great effect. As with any good biopic, very little – if any – prior knowledge of John and his music is required to enjoy this film. That said, Elton John’s catalogue should be recommended listening of its own accord!

All in all, Rocketman is a fun ride that succeeds in capturing Elton John’s brilliance
