See How They Run
The Greatest Murder Ever Staged
This light-hearted whodunnit from screenwriter Mark Chappell is a silly, meta take on a production of Agatha Christie’s famous play, The Mousetrap. Christie’s contractual stipulations mean that with a theatre run that continues to this day, the story cannot be adapted for the screen, a conundrum that Chappell cheekily navigates by presenting historical figures associated with the play navigating an imagined brutal murder.
Set in 1953 in London’s West End, the film follows the discovery of a body in the costume department on the night of the play’s 100th performance. The investigation that follows sees charmingly stereotypical Christie-style characters work to evade arrest by a weary, jaded Inspector played by Sam Rockwell, and his keen-bean rookie partner, Saoirse Ronan. Daft, fun and cheeky, See How They Run is the bouncier sister to Knives Out, channeling modern Christie vibes in a nostalgic historical setting.
