Review:

After the incredibly high bar set by Into the Spider-Verse, there was a clear question over whether its sequel could hit this soaring standard. We now know that it has absolutely eclipsed it. This film improves on every aspect over the previous one and expands the concept widely, whilst hitting just the right amount of ridiculousness. That beautiful art style we have all missed so much returns with a bang, making every scene a painting. The large variety of unique characters will have any comic fan jumping out of their seat, as they see their favourite spider-person on screen for the first time. Returning with another great soundtrack which always matches every scene and blends elegantly with the visuals, it truly shows the overwhelming care that has been put into every second of this film.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld), and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) are all clearly established, so this film wastes no time delving into them deeper and developing them throughout the film. Not being afraid to take risks with these developments is where the film truly shines, as all the characters are tested in ways which act as a key catalyst for change. It makes this film far deeper and truly invests the viewer as we watch our favourite characters try to rise to the occasion and do what is right, even when they do not know the right thing to do.

The film focuses far more on the relationship between Miles and Gwen, a relationship which was teased heavily throughout the previous film and finally confirmed at the end. The two characters intertwine in a way which allows the audience to observe elements of the film through different perspectives.

The story follows Miles and Gwen as they journey through the multiverse and come across the Spider-Society, a team made up of countless spider people from throughout the universe. However, they soon come into conflict with the Society, particularly its leader Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), over the correct way to deal with the latest threat in the form of the Spot (Jason Schwartzman). With such a stacked cast, delivering excellent voice performances from a skilfully written script, this film is a must watch for everyone, not just superhero fans.
