After the Fourth of July celebrations on the beach, four teenage stereotypes, the intelligent Julie (Love Hewitt), prom-queen Helen (Gellar), sports-jock Barry (Phillippe) and would-be rebel/ “poor boy” Ray (Freddie Prinze JR); accidentally kill a man while driving home on a deserted road. Fearing the consequences they decide to dump the body and not to mention it to anybody. Exactly one year later each receives a note on which is written “I know what you did last summer”. The one by one, the four friends find themselves stalked by a mysterious hook-wielding fisherman with murder on his mind.
The movie, a smash hit in the United States, succeeds largely through the winning performances of its two female leads, and the script, by scream director Kevin Williamson, delivers another story in the love-it-or-hate-it style of 70’s and 80’s horror flicks, with some witty lines and in-jokes (though not to the same extent as scream), which make this pop-corn movie a slasher thriller with a humorous touch.
