La Ronde
Whilst big dramatic studio films of this era are mostly associated with Hollywood (the year of La Ronde’s release, 1950, alone had Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, In A Lonely Place, and many more…), Europe was doing the same thing with its own stars (you might recognise Anton Walbrook from The Red Shoes), its own stories, and a lot less censorship - so you can expect La Ronde to say it how it is. Of course, there is more to us showing La Ronde than it being a classic film worth going to the cinema to see (although that’s reason enough!); the film has been rereleased to support the Save Curzon Mayfair campaign – a historic cinema in the heart of London which is under threat when its lease expires in 2024. Why does this matter? Well, beyond saving a beautiful cinema which champions foreign and independent films (a bit like Warwick Student Cinema you might say, just with slightly comfier seats), if a cinema as important as Curzon Mayfair can be shut down then any cinema could be shut down, and given we had to do our own Save Warwick Student Cinema campaign a few years ago we understand how important campaigns like this can be – and that they can be effective! So, come and see a 4k restoration of a classic film and support cinemas in need: once they’re gone, they’re gone.
