Godzilla Minus One
Postwar Japan. From zero to minus.
In the wake of 2016’s mighty Shin Godzilla, the first Toho-produced Godzilla film since 2004 and the best in far longer comes the latest instalment of the legendary Kaiju franchise, and what a triumph it is. Blending the massive scope and wordly destruction you’d expect with the themes of war-guilt and nuclear fear of the original 1954 film, themes growing ever-more relevant and terrifying year by year. Drawing on classic kaiju films and 20th-century American blockbusters, Godzilla – 1.0 is an old-fashioned, forward thinking spectacle like no other, the kind of genuine capital-b Blockbuster that’s finally back on the rise after so many years of middling entertainment. Usher in the New Year and the new term the right way – wanton slaughter and widespread destruction! Catch one of the year’s best films and one I can’t recommend enough watching at the student cinema.
