In recent times Nic Cage has seen his star status and reputation rise once more; having spent years as a joke and starring in B-movie after B-movie, trash after trash, at last his name is finding itself affixed to high-quality projects again. These include interesting (though still thoroughly bizarre) films like Pig, Mandy and now Dream Scenario, in which a schlubby professor (Cage) finds himself starring in the dreams of everyone on earth, catapulting him to fame, influence, and eventual implosion. It’s the rare film that is not only able to deliver on the promise of its wacky, inventive premise, with all the surreal humour and madcap digressions one could hope for, but balances all of that with a human core courtesy of one of Cage’s best performances of the last decade. It’s a dizzyingly entertaining balancing-act of comedy, horror and heart decidedly unlike anything else you’re likely to see this year – a film fan’s dream! (ha, ha. geddit?
