Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) returns, eight years since his last movie, with yet another step into the stark impressionist/realist digital landscapes he’s been carving since the early 2000s. Ferrari, a biopic of a few critical weeks in the life of the larger-than-life car mogul Enzo Ferrari, is half romantic melodrama and half racing movie, all heightened emotions and heightened crashes ranking among Mann’s best work, anchored by the lead duo of Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz and Mann’s gorgeous, sleekly professional aesthetics to deliver one of the year’s very best. Best watched on a big screen, and best watched loud.
