Review:

Back to Black – a nod to her critically-acclaimed album, one of the highest-grossing of all time – is a biopic that celebrates the music and life of legendary singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse. The film explores the fine intricacies of Amy’s creative process through the making of her most popular album, Back to Black, and offers us an intimate insight into the nooks and crannies of her personal life. We follow Amy’s rise to fame as she attempts to find her feet in an often cold-hearted industry, navigating a turbulent on-again-and-off-again relationship along the way. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s film stars Abela as Winehouse, oozing flamboyance and flair, and is set amid a vibrant artistic scene in 90s London. As her popularity skyrockets, Amy’s personal life spirals out of control; in Back to Black we are offered a glimpse of the human behind the celebrity as she becomes Amy Winehouse: global phenomenon.
