This is not your typical bildungsroman: The Sweet East is both a nightmare and a dream, a surrealist tale fuelled by absurdist humour and folkloric whimsy. Serendipitous at times, sinister at others, our doe-eyed protagonist (Ryder) enters a new world of filmmakers and fanatics as she embarks on an odyssey across the American east coast, delving into Hollywood affairs and starting nation-wide manhunts. Its episodic form is capricious and captivating – as is its cast, boasting familiar faces in the likes of contemporary stars Ayo Edebiri and Jacob Elordi. With its dreamlike plot evoking the oddity of Alice in Wonderland or perhaps The Wizard of Oz, The Sweet East is wonderfully weird and begs to be seen.
