Sing Sing
Trust the process.
Sing Sing has been one of my most anticipated releases since I saw the trailer, and one that is certainly not to be missed. The story takes place – and was filmed – in the eponymous Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison in New York, following John ‘Divine G’ Whitfeld (Colman Domingo; Rustin), who has been imprisoned there for a crime he didn’t commit. He and other inmates find purpose through the prison’s theatre programme, preparing for the production of their first original comedy. Notably, the programme depicted in the film is real, and much of its cast is made up of former inmates (playing themselves) who took part in it during their time at Sing Sing. It promises to be a unique and empathetic look at the power of theatre and of art to bring people together and heal, and one that is absolutely worth watching.
