Conclave
What happens behind these walls will change everything
Based on the 2016 novel by Richard Harris, Conclave tells the story of Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, who — following the previous pope’s death — organises a papal conclave in order to elect a new one, only to uncover various nefarious secrets about each candidate. In spite of divided religious reception, Conclave has received critical acclaim, with the performances of its cast — which stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini — receiving special praise. The film also marks a return to drama for director Edward Berger, following 2022’s epic war film All Quiet on the Western Front; however, the trailer still promises a film that matches the grandiose with an intimate, private environment. Indeed, the Guardian describes Conclave as a ‘heavy-breathing battle for hearts, minds and power’. A popular film for a variety of ages and interests, Conclave already appears to be a contender for 2024’s Oscars; it will prove to be a thrilling watch, and will likely be one of the year’s best films.
