FREE FOR MEMBERS: Hundreds of Beavers
Mike Cheslik’s 2024 slapstick comedy Hundreds of Beavers is quite possibly the funniest and most creative of any film released in the last decade. Cheslik manages to make both a loving homage and balls-to-the-wall evolution of Abbott and Costello and Chaplin-esque physical comedy in a way that most modern attempts are unable to do and in a way that still feels fresh and inspired even 100 years after its popularity. The film is capable of remaining 10 steps ahead in every way and with a budget of only £120,000 it remains bolder and more wholly complete than films with 100 times its budget. In spite of its financial limitations, the blend of CG-animation and live action further enhances the zany aesthetic. It is unmissable and quite possibly the greatest response to anyone who may claim slapstick is dead or lacking value and effort as Hundreds of Beavers has both in spades.
