Nickel Boys
Set in the 1960s, Nickel Boys (based on the Colson Whitehead novel) follows the story of two boys, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), who are sent to The Nickel Academy reform school after ‘troublesome’ behaviour. The story is based on the real-life abusive treatment received by students in Florida from the Dozier School for Boys. Together, the two boys form a close friendship and survive their unjust treatment from the academy. This film was shot in a first-person perspective of the two characters, with the director (RaMell Ross) describing scenes as “one-ers” which were hard to “choreograph”. With such a unique narrative, Nickel Boys looks to be an immersive and emotional experience.
