Tarzan

Disney’s latest film is an adaptation of the classic Burroughs’ story. An English couple are shipwrecked off the coast of Africa with their baby boy. Unfortunately they are killed by Sabor, a rather nasty leopard, and only the baby survives. He is rescued from the leopard’s clutches by Kala, a friendly gorilla, who recently lost her own baby to Sabor, and brings “Tarzan” up as her own. Kala’s mate, Kerchack, is the leader of the gorillas, and does not approve of his new “son”, so Tarzan sets out to prove himself to his adopted father.

Enter an English expedition made up of the lovely Jane, her doddering father Porter, and the malicious hunter Clayton. The Porters are gorilla enthusiasts and desperate to catch a glimpse, unaware that Clayton is plotting to capture and sell the apes when they find them.

Naturally, they bump into Tarzan, and so begins a chain of hilarious, exciting and touching events, which lead to a thrilling and rather dark climax.

Phil Collins provides the music, which unfortunately gives it a somewhat eighties feel. It’s also a shame that almost none of the songs are sung by the characters, but they are still really good, as usual.

Among the host of famous voices Minnie Driver in particular is excellent. Her less than feminine voice is a welcome change from sickly sweet heroines such as Ariel and Belle.

Tarzan is a great film, with all the tears and laughs that you would expect from a top of the range Disney movie. It has possibly the best background art that they have ever produced, and is guaranteed not to let down even the most ardent Disney fans.
