A film about a talking pig never seemed destined to bring home the box office bacon. It may come as a surprise to learn however, that, with the Oscars looming, Babe is up there with a Best Picture nomination and the little pig with the funny hairstyle has kept audiences enchanted for months.
Babe, the runt of a litter is rescued from the slaughterhouse by Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell), adopted by a sheepdog called Fly and fattened up nicely by the farmer's wife. Not too impressed by the prospect of ending up on the dinner table, Babe - with the assistance of an anorexic duck - resolves to save his own bacon by becoming a sheep pig.
Split neatly into chapters, each introduced by a musical mob of mice, and featuring an ensemble cast of farmyard creatures. Babe was a labour of love for director Chris Noonan. Noonan, who seamlessly blends a mixture of animatronic and real life animals has created a hilarious and uplifting fairytale that has been doing wonders for the vegetarian mindset. Babe is a genuine original, you'd be rash to miss it.
