Basic Instinct meets Alien meets The Omen in this fine example of a bare-faced (and breasted) monster-on-the-loose horror movie.
Yes, it's B-movie time with this ripping yarn about an alien exchange program going horribly wrong. Sil, the result of an experiment in which human DNA is mixed with alien DNA sequences (which aliens have kindly transmitted from space), is planned to be terminated when she escapes into the wide-world. Quickly mutating from a cute 12 year-old blonde into a twenty-something playmate of the month, she promptly starts clubbing in the hope of finding a suitable mate with which she can fill the Earth with her evil spawn. Hot on her trail is a mixture of different experts, including Kingsley's mad scientist and Michael Madsen's ruthless killer, with a mission to seek out and destroy her before it's too late...
With H.R. Giger design work into the bargain, this film sets itself up to be compared with Alien (but, in this reviewer's humble opinion, Ridley Scott's film will not be surpassed). However, this is a much more tongue-in-cheek affair, with all of the cast enjoying themselves in their roles. With plenty of jump-shocks (plenty of fresh underwear required), plenty of stress-relieving humour, some outstanding effects and non-stop action, Species is everything a good monster-movie should be: disgusting and fun. Besides, you can't complain about a film which has a female alien with a nice line in kisses that make your head explode and tentacle-sprouting breasts, can you?
